Arriving at Catalina State Park one was immediately conscious
of the quiet, being spread out, and the wonderful background of the Catalina
Mountains. This is in contrast to the noisy Rincon County RV Resort where we
were for two weeks. There we were on the flight path for not only Tucson
airport but also for military jets practicing landings most days. Here we are
in the Coronado National Forest. We stayed here for two days three years ago
but have booked in this year for six days. There are many activities – hiking
the Romero Canyon trail, biking, birding and a Romero Ruin Interpretive trail.
Nearby is an equestrian center where we have observed large horse trailers with
very well outfitted horses and riders setting off on trail rides. Also close by
a large shopping center with a movie theatre. We went to see “Manchester by the
Sea” – a drama about a man with a problem past who unexpectedly is named as
guardian to his 16 yr old nephew. Enjoyed by me for the realistic human
relations, lack of Holywood type drama and great scenes of a fishing port on
the east coast – not so much by Penny. It is not really a feel good movie but
as an artistic work of film making worth recommending to others.
A funny story: Penny was talking to a young
man who was sleeping in a tent near our site. He was a chess teacher and moving
from San Francisco to Tucson for a job. He was camping while waiting to move
into an apartment. One night be was so cold (it has been down to 4C) he had to
get up and go to the 24hrs open Walmart to buy a warmer sleeping bag!
